Since the end of August, the USA has been raising tariffs on packages with a value of less than 800 euros. Many postal service providers are overwhelmed – and deliver deliveries to the USA.
International postal traffic to the United States has decreased by 81 percent after the introduction of new US customs regulations. This is reported by the World Post Association in Bern. The UN organization compared the data of August 29, when the duty-free for goods imports with a value of less than $ 800 was abolished, with the value of one week earlier. At the World Post Association, it is assumed that the burglary has been ongoing so far, said a spokeswoman.
In response to the new customs rules, 88 postal service providers worldwide at least partially stopped shipping to the USA worldwide. Among other things, the Bonn Group DHL, which also appears under the Deutsche Post brand, has significantly restricted its parcel service. However, exceptions continue to apply to some private shipments.
With the elimination of the so-called de-minimis rule in the United States, the same customs set has been due for many packages since August 29 as for other imports from the respective country of origin-for example, 15 percent for shipments from the EU. US President Donald Trump had justified the customs step in the fact that dangerous drugs had been smuggled into the USA on a large scale packages. In recent years, duty -free package deliveries have risen sharply thanks to Chinese platforms such as Temu and Shein.
According to its own statements, the World Post Association is working on technical solutions to get mail traffic with the USA again. Since Friday, service providers have been available for a program with which the necessary tariffs could be calculated and paid for, it said.
