The EU is the largest donor for the Palestinian Authority. Now she has promised further financial aid – under certain conditions.
The European Union wants to increase its financial support for the Palestinian Authority with a new aid package of around 1.6 billion euros. The help should flow over three years and have been linked to reforms, said the EU commissioner Dubravka Šuica, which is responsible for the Middle East, the Reuters news agency.
“We want you to reform yourself, because without reforms you will not be strong and credible enough to be a conversation partner not only for us, but also for Israel,” said Šuica.
The Palestinian government is criticized for corruption and poor administration. It has only limited self -administration over some areas in the West Bank under Israeli military crew. The radical-Islamic Hamas is in the Gaza strip.
Of the new auxiliary package, 620 million euros are planned for financial support and a reform of the Palestinian Authority, said Šuica. 576 million euros would be provided for “resilience and reconstruction” of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. 400 million euros would come from the European investment bank as a loan.
The EU is the largest donor in the Palestinians. In the past twelve years, the average EU support for the Palestinian Authority has been around 400 million euros, said Šuica. EU representatives have repeatedly expressed hope that the Palestinian Authority will take over the administration of the Gaza Strip after the end of the war between Israel and Hamas. The right-religious government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has so far rejected this, as well as the goal of the EU of a two-state solution.
